EMAIL Scam addresses

If you are selling anything on the net through sites like Gumtree or Trading Post and I'm sure there are others, do not respond to any SMS you get on your phone asking you to write to an email address.

If they don't want to talk to you, person to person, without hiding their phone number, you can bet they are trying to hide something else.

If they suggest or say anything about overseas, whether they are overseas or they want the goods sent overseas, treat it as a scam. Who in their right mind would buy a car in Australia and then pay the cost of shipping it to Malasya or Saudi Arabia when you can purchase something like a Mercedes Benz in those countries, brand new for half the price.

They will often tell you that they can't phone you because there are strict rules about making phone calls, or there is bad weather, or they are on an oil rig. For the same sorts of reasons they can't come and see the item but they will have a 'shipping agent' who will pick it up.

One of the most common things you will notice about these scamers is, they will talk about the money, but rarely, if ever, will they ask to see the item you are selling. They will almost certainly be prepared to buy the item unseen. If it is a car, don't send a photograph showing the number plate or other identifying plates (VIN or engine number), you might be surprised how quickly they seem to already own it or have some sort of claim on it.

Don't let anyone take possession of any goods, no matter what the reason, until you have the money in the bank. Not a cheque in the mail, not even a bank cheque from what appears to be a recognised bank, wait until it is cleared by your bank (usually 4 working days).

And don't send money to them (the so called buyers) for any reason. When was the last time you had to pay your bank a sum of money so that they could give some money. You are the seller, you don't have to pay to sell items, so why would you have to send money to them so that you can get the money they have supposedly paid to you, usually via PayPal or Western Union.

IF   THEY   ASK   FOR   MONEY   -   YOU   KNOW   IT   IS   A   SCAM.  CEASE   ALL  CONTACT,   DO   NOT   RESPOND   TO   ANYTHING.

If you have any more email addresses please post a comment below. Even if you don't have a new email address please add a comment and let's show just how big and widespread this problem is. It may prompt someone in a government somewhere to do something about the scamers and other criminals on the internet.

Here is the text of a typical email sent by one of the scamers -

Thanks for the mail, I am very keen. How i wish i could come for viewing and inspection as am currently overseas at the moment and i want it picked up before i get back. I would be paying via PayPal which is safer for me or bank transfer as well safe. Kindly send me a paypal payment invoice or create an account at www.paypal.com.au if you don't have one or your bank details for me to make payment. I will make a concrete pick up arrangement with my transport agent who will be coming over for pick up once you receive full payment into your account. I will be expecting your email.I will need this following details so i can proceed with the payment right away
Are you the first owner? What is your reason for selling it?
Have a nice day.

Would you buy something without seeing it ? Some of these items are cars and boats and they have to be here in person to register them. In Queensland at least, a human being must front up with the paper work to register or change the ownership. Once it is registered, they can renew it by electronic means. If they are overseas, they can't register it and if they do send someone to pick it up, it will remain in your name, and everything that happens after that will happen in your name.

On some of these emails you will find an email address that purports to be for PayPal and looks legitimate such as -
service@paypal.com.au    or
service@paypal.com   BUT
the underlying address that the email will go to is -  informationcenter@mail2finance.com   or   service@paypalworldwide.com, which of course are scam addresses.  DON'T WRITE TO THEM

Even I got contacted by a person who claimed to be in UK and willing to buy my car which is in Australia. He wants me to cover his shipping charges via Western Union Money transfer as he has no access to bank. I shared my paypal details & home address with him without knowing he is a scammer. Will that going to trouble me?

Hi,
I have just completed the Payment from my paypal account to your PayPal Account and i am sure you have received the confirmation from PayPal regarding the Payment made. You can check your e-mail or junk/spam for confirmation of payment.a total of $4,200.00 was sent, $3,500.00 for the merchandise and the extra $600.00 for the shipper's and $100.00 for western union charges, which you will be sending to the address below via western union

Name: Madiyana Binti Jaafar
Address: 12,Tmn Bukit Seputih
City: Kuantan
State: Kuala Lumpur
Zip Code: 53000
Country: Malaysia

All other documentations should be prepared by the Pick Up Agent. You should send the money soon so that the agent can schedule time and you would know when the Pick Up would commence, make sure you're home. I advice you to check both your inbox or junk folder for the payment confirmation message..The shipper would be coming around to your area to have the merchandise picked up once you have sent the shipping charges fee to them, as i need you to let me know what time you want them to come and where (your address & phone # you can be reached on)

I will be waiting to hear from you once the money has been sent to my shipper.
Thanks for the business.

This is crazy! Please be carefull! Name and shame this people

Hey Guys, I am selling an ABBA Collectable on Gumtree... and got a text from joshandmarita@gmail.com and I emailed him.. this was the response... Thanks, as for this price it is ok. Due to demanding and eventful work i won't be able to come and view it myself, i am interested in the item and it is needed overseas. I will be making use of a shipping company to have this picked up from your side and have it delivered. Further arrangements will be made with you in regards to the pick up once i have paid you.

I would appreciate if you email me with more pictures (if available) too since i won't be be able to see this in person, I'd be paying via PayPal or Bank transfer so kindly get back to me with your paypal or bank details for payment, cheers.

So glad I didnt give this guy Paypal or Bank details... we thought it sounded a bit suss.

This is another tell tail sign that it is a scam, when they tell you that for one reason or another they can't go and see the item themselves.

The best method is to just ignore them, because if you engage in conversation with them you are just getting deeper.

Ask yourself this; would you buy something sight unseen ? You have no idea what sort of condition it is in or whether it will function as you would expect it to, so why don't they want to come and have a look at the item ?

At June 20, 2012 at 7:09 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

They want you to pay money so that you can get what they are supposedly paying you ? ? ? ?

Now that is just stupid.

Bit like the Nigerian lottery win isn't ?
Or the long lost relative who has died and left you a fortune ?

All you have to do is pay them a sum of money so that they can process your claim.

As Greg has said, stop writing to them and ignore them, IT IS A SCAM.

A couple of points about this scam email.

He is a "petroleum engineer" - 'I'm well paid, I have got the money'

He is "on a rig offshore" - 'impossible for me to come and have a look at it'

The "satellite server has been down" - 'impossible for me to call you' - 'but I can still send you a text message'

The other give away is the grammar.

Alright Mate,
I am interested in buying your item. I wish i could come for viewing and inspection as am currently out of the country at the moment and i want it picked up before my arrival, though i will be back in couple of weeks. I would like to pay you using paypal due to my inability to make a bank deposit which is safer for me. Kindly send me a paypal payment invoice or create an account with paypal on http://www.paypal.com.au/ if you dont have one. I will make a solid pick up arrangement with the shipping company who will be coming over for pick up once you receive full payment into your paypal account. Have a nice day. Few more photos will be appreciated as well.

If you sent any information that identifies any bank account, credit card or other financial transaction account, you should contact that company immediately and put a stop on any attempt by the scamer to get any money or have that account canceled and get a new one. Yes, it will be an inconvenience for you, but that is better than waiting until the doors open on the next working day.

It would be good if people could read about these scamers before they respond.

Im posting you the emails that this moron has sent me, so people will know what to lookout for. I knew it was a scam as soon as they wanted me to pay some "agent" fees. And then they wanted me to deposit it through Western Union! lol. Seriously!!!
I stopped replying after that... but the emails just kept coming. And wait till you read these emails. A five year old child could do a better job at lying than this moron. If anything, they have provided hours of entertainment for me and my family. Cant wait to see what he/she will write next. I just hope no one fell for this pathetic excuse of a scam.
Just remember, Pay pal will NEVER ASK YOU TO PAY ANYTHING UPFRONT. EVER!!! To check if its pay pal thats writing to you, make sure you log on to the pay pal website through your browser search bar, DO NOT USE THE LINK THAT IS EMAILED TO YOU!! also pay pal will not address you by anything but your actual name. This moron kept addressing me as mate, and when I received the fake pay pal emails, they always addressed me using my email address (that I use as my pay pal login, which happened to be the only piece of information that I provided to the scammer before the warning bells started ringing). Oh and watch for things like spelling mistakes, inconstancies with capital letters when they are referring to names and trademarks (e.g.. PayPal, pay pal, Pay pal etc.) They addressed the email correspondence to me with these inconsistencies. Ill give you an example not using my real name of course..... one was Georgie.girl@yahoo.com and the next email was georgie.girl@yahoo.com. Although these seem like small errors,.... remember. Pay pal would not make such mistakes, because the emails they send are automated!!! and computers don't make such mistakes unless there is a person operating them. :)
I could just keep going, and list everything that was not genuine about this correspondence, but I'll let everyone else have a look and decide for themselves. Also if anyone wants more info on what to look out for, go on the real PayPal website and check out the page on phishing emails and scams. Anyhow....Here are the emails written by the stupidest scam artist in the world. Enjoy :)

Hi mate

I m through with pick up discussion but there seems to be a little problem but i have come up with a lasting solution that will help the purchase go smoothly.. i must compel to u that i am confronting a difficulty with the pick up of the item.. i just got an email from my agent that he won't come and pick up the item unless i pay him the agent commission fee first in order to be able to schedule a pick up time for the item , my pick up agent head quarters is in the United Kingdom and all payments made for pick up from anywhere in the world is sent to their head quarters in the Uk and the only form of payments they accept is western union money transfer and i tried to pay online but i will need a credit card which i didnt bring on board, and there is no post office or any western union agent on sea! so i have to ask you to help me with the pick up fees,

I will include the $550 they charged to pick up and take it to my Brother-in-law(1st class treatment), to the payments i will send through paypal, after i have made the payments, i will need you to help me send the $550 to my pick up agent through western union money transfer, the western union money transfer can be made at a post office near to you, there is always a western union agent in most post offices.I will be making the payments shortly and will email you as soon as it has been done.kindly get back to me as soon as u get a confirmation from paypal about ur paypal accreditation...kindly get back to me if u can do it.i will add the $550 with the initial deposit including any charges that might arise..i will be waiting mate.

I will include the $550 and $100 for the western union charges. the total amount that will be transferred was the deposit of $1,500 + 550 + 100 the total amount is $2,150. pls note that pick up will take place after the full fund has being credited in ur paypal account. i am sure i can confide in u as i can see u as an honest person..
Thanks!!

ust to confirm to you that the payment process has just being accomplised and i am much more optimistic that a payment notification should have being mailed to u cos i received an email confirming to me that the total sum has being debited from my account,i will advice that u check ur paypal email if you have received the notification of payment, i sent $2,150.00 in all,To my own perspective, paypal will be holding the fund and the fund will be credited into your account until they have the western union MTCN which was a security tool that will prompt a fast accreditation of the fund into ur account.in other words, u will be reimbursed after they might have received the MTCN. the item is to be delivered to my Brother-in-law in Perth, i will need you to send the $550 to my pick up agent Headquarters via western union money transfer(this can be done from the post office, as they usually have a western union agent there),i added extra $100 to cover the western union charges which shouldn't be more that $80-100 but just to be sure i added $100. paypal said it will take 2-3 working days for ur account to be verified and the fund will be credited into ur account in 2-3 working days after they might have receive the excess fee paid by me that was meant for the pick up agent.... Here is my pick up agent Headquarter info needed to get the money sent through western union money transfer:

Anthony Sullivan
Winscombe Crescent
Ealing W5 1AZ London,
England.

Please kindly email the necessary details to paypal :the MTCN which you will be given at the western union after the $550 has been sent as well as the sender's name and address used to send the money through western union as well as the secret question and answer used in sending the $550 so i can forward it to paypal or better still you can email it to paypal directly, that is fine with me as well for the money i sent to be credited into your account after they might have receive the information they needed to release the whole money in your account.

I will need your address where it will be picked up,and my pickup agent will contact you after they have received the payments in order to book a time for the pick up thanks for ur coprations.
God bless you.. my agent will assemble upon pick up
Cheers!

Dear georgie.girl@yahoo.com
We wrote to keep you informed that the fund will be credited into your PayPal account after you might have send the MTCN for the pick up agent. the fee has being deducted from the buyers account and will be credited into your account as soon as we receive the MTCN which was a security measure put in place to guarantee both parties of a save and protected transaction.

The fund is yet to be credited into your account all because you are yet to get back to us with the MTCN which was the 10 digit number that will be issued to you at the post office after you might have completed the western union transaction of the excess fee which was $550.00 AUD.

You are to pay the $550.00 AUD upfront at the Post office and get back to us with the MTCN number, the senders name and address. after the receipt of the MTCN, we will review and implement your account and the fund will be credited into your account.

You are to comply with the directives as soon as possible so as to ensure a vast accreditation of the fund into your account. we assure you of a prompt accreditation as soon as we receive the MTCN.

They were very keen to go after you, weren't they ?

Reason is, you entered into a conversation with them. You weren't to know at the start, but once you respond to them they will keep nibbling away at you in the hope that you will do what they want; and what they want of course, is that you will send some money.

Sellers DON'T HAVE TO PAY FOR ANYTHING

Don't let them fool you by quoting the names of businesses. They mention Gadens Lawyers and even the ABN number, but all ABNs are 11 digits long, this one is only 9 digits.

If you paid the money through your local bank branch, go and see them at the earliest opportunity and ask if it can be stopped. (it may be too late) If you paid it any other way, I'm afraid you will most probably have to just say good-bye to it. I know that hurts, but it is better to write it off and not try to chase it, because it will most probably just cost you even more money.

Hope you learn a very costly lesson here. When you are selling things - YOU DO NOT NEED TO PAY ANYTHING - not for any reason. Even when you are buying something, ask someone else if they think it is a scam first. It is better to look a little stupid for a little while than to have this sort of thing happen to you.

I am sorry to hear what has happened.

Hey, I don't know if this email has been posted but I was trying to sell a juicer on Gumtree and the guy sent me a text saying to email him at crawfordhills-matt@hotmail.co.uk. Which I did because it's not the first time I've sold something online, but then the emails got weird.
I've sold a lot of things and they've always been super easy. This guy was saying that he needed me to do a Western Union transfer (because it was for agent fees as he was at sea and this agent was picking up a few other things for him, and the juicer was being sent to his brother in law in Perth) of $500 and the money would be credited into my account when I sent the MTCN as a reply to an email I got off PayPal.

The thing that concreted the scam for me was that I have received emails from PayPal before about invoices and charges. They come up on my account as service@paypal.com.au where as this email from PayPal asking for the MTCN from the Western Union Transfer was from service@paypal.com. AND it was written in the bad english that this 'Matt' had written all of his other emails in AND it came up with the hotmail warning "Always Show Content from pickupagentfees@mail2australia.com, which isn't PayPal!!!!

I told him that it was too hard, I wasn't interested, I didn't have that much money - hence me selling things - and I wished him well. He persisted but I told him that I wasn't going to budge, that there was something wrong about all of this and that I didn't want to sell him the juicer anymore. I haven't heard from him since last night.

So watch out for pickupagentfees@mail2australia.com and crawfordhills-matt@hotmail.co.uk!!!

Hi Greg,

Wish I came across your site before last weekend, because I would have been more savvy about all of this. First time I go to sell anything on the internet (a couple of furniture pieces of my Aunt who passed away) and I received these SMS text and emails - the exact wording as you've listed above.

I have had about 9 communication emails from "Anne", and two phoney email addresses from Paypal. I have now reported this to Paypal and to the ACCC Scamwatch.

Would you mind adding "anne.william0009@gmail.com" to your scam list.

Ohhh and the two phoney Paypal addresses, well initially the address looks legitimate, however, the address that shows between the arrows are not Paypal addresses:

service@paypal.com < informationcenter@mail2finance.com >

It's also come in as

service@paypal.com.au < informationcenter@mail2finance.com >

and then the other one (also fake)

service@paypal.com.au < service@paypalworldwide.com >

Apparently the buyer (who is overseas at the moment) - yeah right, paid Paypal (as she asked me to send an invoice through them) and also paid an additional $950 for shipping to Malaysia. Then I received an email from "Paypal" (fake address) saying they were holding the money and the payment could not be reversed, but I had to go to Western Union and pay the shipping costs. I am continually getting emails from "Anne William" asking me what's happening and the Paypal addresses chasing me to pay up!

I know that sometimes people get started on these things by replying before they find out that it is a scam, but, you should never reply to them or engage in any discussion with them, because it will only escalate and eventually you will receive an intimidating and or threatening response.
The previous response should be sent to both scam watch (www.scamwatch.gov.au/) and the Australian Federal Police. They may not be able to do anything about this particular incident but it will help their intelligence gathering efforts.

Hello,

I have just completed the payment for the Java and you should have received a confirmation email from paypal in regards to the payment. If you could please re-send me the address to where i will send the courier company to pick up the Java‏ that i can provide them with it. The company that I will be dealing with is Courier Logistic I have dealt with them many times before and found them to be very efficient. As you may have noticed I have made an additional payment on top of all the other charges, the sum of 10,000.00 NOK This needs to be sent to the courier company which can easily be done through Bank Transfer This is their requested form of payment when it comes to dealing with international exchanges. Upon receiving the payment they will arrange to pick up the Java‏ within the next 48 hours. They will most probably call you, which reminds me if you could also send me your contact number again i will forward it on to them so they can arrange a convenient pick up time. The payment will have to be sent in cash which you will need to do via Bank to Bank Transfer, however as you see you will be reimbursed as soon as the funds will clear through paypal.

The amount that I have just transferred to you is on hold through paypal as they need the Bank transfer deposit receipt to confirm the courier company has been paid. Once they received that then the payment will be cleared into your paypal account. Just to reassure you that he amount has already left my account and simply being held by Paypal until the transaction is completed successfully.

The information you need in order to complete the payment through Bank Transfer is listed below:

I just encountered bonand104@gmail.com, Brittany cole who claims to a 43 year old woman.

I posted an ad to sell my printer on gumtree singapore and he (I was supposed to transfer funds via western union to a indian guy who lives in malaysia) was very keen. He claimed he transferred by PayPal and asked me to check my spam mail. Of course it was in it. It seems to be from service@paypal.com.au but on closer inspection the mail was from customercareverifiersdesk@consultant.com

Printer is $500 but he claims to have transferred $920, $420 as shipping. And that it's Paypal regulation to safeguard seller and buyer that I transfer the $420 by western union before PayPal releases the $500 to my bank account. what?!

when i asked if he was trying to scam me, his reply:

"What do you mean?.I am a woman of 43years and I am comfortable enough to live for myself and take care of my children. So why should i do a bad thing?..It is paypal's policy and you know paypal is a big company. They wont do anything to spoil their own name.So get the transaction completed by tomorrow and we can proceed"

I replied: "ya right. the email is obviously not from paypal : customercareverifiersdesk@consultant.com."

his reply: "What are you talking about?.paypal is a big compnay and as you can see i made my account with paypal when i was in australia. That is their customer care email and i have been receiving emails from them through it.So what are you talking about?"

my last email to him:

well paypal says you are a fraud.
I am reporting you.

cecilia.david009@gmail.com has been courting me.

It originally came in as an SMS. The body of the message looked legit and I didn't pick up on the fact that the contact was not a mobile number and was a random name instead. I stupidly replied to the email address asking which item that I have listed are they interested in... and this is the return email below. Needless to say, the old gray matter started to spark.

--------------------------

Alright Mate, I am very keen. How i wish i could come for viewing and inspection as am currently overseas at the moment and i want it picked up before i get back. Due to my inability to make a bank deposit, I would be paying via PayPal which is safer for me or bank transfer as well safe. Kindly send me a paypal payment invoice or create an account at www.paypal.com.au if you dont have one or your bank details for me to make payment. I will make a concrete pick up arrangement with my transport agent who will be coming over for pick up once you receive full payment into your PayPal account. Have a nice day.

Cheers and pls inform other buyers you sold it as am ready to purchase it right away.

Thanks All. After enquiring further why the request to transfer money which I never agreed to, the below email is what I have received. Obviously, they are not concerned with responses of going to PayPal to verify. Beyond blocking their address, is there any mechanism to report these crimes?

--------------------------------
From: Trevor Samuels [mailto:tv.samss@gmail.com]

Hi Again,
According to the policy and protocols from PayPal and also in the payment receipt they also sent me here, Its saying the same thing. The fees has been removed from my account and it has been successfully approved but for security reasons, you have to send out the shipper's fees to them as requested by PayPal before they credit your account with all your money and also they should have sent you another email to explain everything better to you. You have nothing to worry about, You just have to make sure you send out the fees immediately via western union and mail the details to PayPal for verification and immediately you send them the transfer details and they confirmed that you have truly sent out the fees to the agent, then they will credit your account with every additional charges you spend within few hours as they have explained to me.
Make sure this is done asap so we can finalize this deal soonest and i assure you once again that everything is okay and under control so you have nothing to fear.
Cheers

Lucky I googled the email name I got from PayPal and it showed me this website.

Desoconnor32@gmail.com

Hello There,

I have just completed the Payment from my paypal account to your Account and i am sure you have received the confirmation from PayPal regarding the Payment made. You can check your e-mail for confirmation of payment. A total of $1,050.00 was sent and the extra $300.00 for the shipper's and $50.00 for western union charges, which you will be sending to the address below via western union

Name: MORGAN SUNDARAN
Address: 12,Tmn Bukit Seputih
City: Kuantan
State: Kuala Lumpur
Zip Code: 53000
Country: Malaysia.

I received a response from a "David Latty" to an ad for an Avan I have listed on Caravan Camping Sales. I replied to his initial SMS and received the following response:

---

Thanks a lot for the email .I am away at sea at the moment,i work with New Zealand Oil and Gas (NZOG) and we are presently offshore in New Zealand Taranaki Basin on kapo project. We do not have access to phone at the moment, its 15days off and 15days on,which is why I contacted you with internet messaging facility.

I am buying this for my for my father, and i want it to be delivered before my arrival in NT . However, does it have any history I should be aware of? and why are you selling if you don't mind my asking.I am already in talks with the courier that will handle the pick-up and delivery to my family .

As regards the payment, I can pay you through direct bank deposit, using ppal instant bank wire transfer service, I will need your bank details. If you are not comfortable with that, you can set up apaypal account proper at www.paypal.com.au and I will make the payment through paypal, this way, all I will need is your paypal email address.
Cheers!!

---

This pinged my scam radar and a little investigation showed that this is a scam. I reported the email address to the Caravan Camping Sales abuse people.

Today I received another SMS from byphilip1@gmail.com for my Gumtree lisitng of the same item. I Gogled the email addy and found this page. Thanks for the list, it has saved me from wasting further time and effort on these fools.

Samuel Olivia and Desmond O'Connor responded to the same Gumtre advert. Name and address to send the "shipping payment" were the same.

Divulging the email address connected to your paypal account should not be too much of an issue. Chances are it is the same account that you used to email the scammer anyway. I told him an address that isn't connected to my paypal account, and still got an email from paypal, and another threatening legal action.
I think these guys don't even see the add, sms is probably automated; as in both my cases the sms solicits advice about the price.

My husband has posted two adds on Gumtree since Early December, and we have received 4 separate SMS responses.
I could pass on the email addresses to your blog, but honestly, are they that dumb that they are not continually creating disposable email and sms details? Can you not generate an SMS via the computer these days, and make it appear it is coming from a phone with any good Aussie sounding name from anywhere?
Tracking these people is going to prove very difficult, as they have purposely made it so that they remain behind a virtual cloud of false identity on every level. I would imagine that the ones behind this would have degrees in computer programming and hacker type abilities. Very smart, and very dangerous IMO. They also seem to have people who are studying law, who can come up with threatening legal type jargon designed to scare susceptible sellers into believing they have broken the law... WOW.

We pretty much sussed from the outset that they are scams, so after 1 initial e-mail we sent, we now ignore all requests for further information.

These people are giving Gumtree a bad name. People will be reluctant to trust any legitimate sales now. Such a shame.

Great blog Greg. This is going to help a lot of people.
I'd hate to think how many people they get, but are too embarrassed to tell anyone. :(

Thank you.

Thanks Greg. Another "byphilip1@gmail" from me, sent on 24th December, so obviously the same emails get used over and over on different sellers. The initial approach text says exactly this:

"switchfoot9: Good evening. .just viewed this listing on gumtree. Do you still have it available for sale and what's the final asking price? Kindly reply me direct to my email: byphilip1(AT)gmail.com"

I'm instinctively suspicious of any response from any of the free ad sites. If they don't mention by name the item I'm selling, they rarely get a response.

Anyway, really appreciate you taking the time to make this public knowledge. All the best,
David

Thanks for the mail....I am very keen. How i wish i could come for viewing and inspection as am currently overseas at the moment and i want it picked up before i get back. Due to my inability to make a bank deposit, I would be paying via PayPal which is safer for me or bank transfer as well safe. Kindly send me a paypal payment invoice or create an account at www.paypal.com if you dont have one or your bank details for me to make payment. I will make a concrete pick up arrangement with my transport agent who will be coming over for pick up once you receive full payment into your PayPal account. Have a nice day.

Cheers and pls inform other buyers you sold it as am ready to purchase it right away....Arthur

collejacob22@gmail.com received email about purchasing furniture:

Thanks a lot.I have actually tried to get this kind of Merchandise here earlier from here but most of the ones I got either have one fault or the other and some have even had accidents in the past while some are extremely exorbitant. As to the price, Price is Ok. So if you deem the offer good enough, If this is acceptable kindly get back to me with your paypal email address and the details below so i can proceed with the payment. I can only pay through paypal or bank transfer at the moment as i do have access to my bank account online, but i have it attached to my paypal account, and this is why i insisted on using paypal or bank transfer to pay,all i will need is your paypal email address to make the payments via PayPal and if you do not have a paypal account yet,its pretty easy to set one up at www.paypal.com and if you want the payment to be made via bank transfer send me your bank name,Account name, bank account, bsb for the payment..

i will be expecting your email.
I will need this following details so i can proceed with the payment right away
Are you the first owner?
What is your reason for selling it?
Your PayPal e-Mail Address :full name:
I'm sorry, just want to be sure about the sale before i proceed.
If you would like to talk more about this item, you can chat or send me an email via this yahoo id (collejacob22@gmail.com)

Yep, have my car on gumtree and have had both artsligh@gmail.com and jssbiak7030@outlook.com contact me. The latter mentioned the 'bad weather' and that they were buying for their son at Charles Darwin University. Very dodgy!

That collejacob22@gmail.com is a busy person! Two more to look out for

katemcc.2011@gmail.com Katie Lee White
collejacob22@gmail.com Jacob Collins

I advertised a sofa on Gumtree and the same night received a text from 'Katie' offering me a good price for it. She claimed she was working for KLM Airlines and could not come and inspect it because of her flight schedule. She wanted to organise a courier to take it to Darwin where she was apparently moving to (I checked and KLM do not fly into Darwin!). I got more suspicious when she emailed me to say she had paid substantially more into her Paypal account to cover her courier fees. I had to do a transfer from Western Union before they would release the funds.

Not long after that I received a text from 'Jacob' wanting to know if I had a firm price for my sofa. I explained it had been sold. When I suspected 'Katie' was a scammer, I emailed 'Jacob' back to let him know that the sofa was available again and also said 'I 'nearly' succumbed to a phishing scam', he replied with 'Get the f*ck'. Charming!

Posted 2 x motorbikes on Gumtree for sale. Have had several contacts that have all requested we email them.

One of them claimed to be on 'deployment' and I was suckered into replying....
The story: schosking@gmail.com (Scott Hosking) has promised to buy my bike, sight unseen, pay me into my bank account via paypal and arrange transportation via an agent to the USA as a surprise present for his brother. He's unable to come to see the bike because he's on deployment at some 'camp' and has a strict boss who limits texts and emails.
Every question I asked about the bike being registered in QLD and did he want it deregistered etc...the response was always about payment into paypal.
I offered the use of a broker and again, "I can transfer the money to you today"
I started to get the heebeegeebies and googled the email address. Thanks for having it on the site.

His details: Scott Hosking schosking@gmail.com ph: +1 (319) 462-8733

The other one, is laughable....
Text received from Robyn Murphy +61 428 465 117
"Sent from: Robyn Murphy. Hi mate ,Is your bike advert still available for sale and what is your firm price ? please contact me on crisell.sandra102@gmail.com . Cheers .

We replied 'which bike' No response.

Then 2 days later a text from the same number!
" Sent from: damiendemolder@btinternet.com Hi mate, I am interested in your Bike Ad on gumtree. Kindly get back to me on my email damiendemolder@btinternet.com if still up for sale. Thanks"

Yeah, as if.

Robyn Murphy was listed on a scammers site the NZ govt has. That was enough for me. But to be silly enough to use the same number in two days to the same person....not bright.

Thanks so much, it was good to have my hunch confirmed and not get suckered in any further than I was.

We received the exact same email... word for word, in relation to a drum kit we are selling on Gumtree. We did not pick up on the scam until they informed up about us being "mandated" to sent the extra $600 he sent us via paypal (which was not visible in our account) to a shipping company in Malaysia.
The guy we were dealing with was nathanbut3@gmail.com
So glad we picked up on the scam!
We then began recieving emails from "paypal" which were sent from the premierjohnjarvis@gmail.com account too!

Don't respond to any of these emails. They may look like threats, and to the unwary, they may even look legitimate, but they are just a bluff. They DO NOT come from PayPal.

Ignore them!

I contacted Paypal and in relation to what to do about these scammers and they gave me the email address phishing@paypal.com.au to forward all the emails on to. Not sure wether to send them there or to the spoof@paypal.com.au one. What do you think?

At February 26, 2013 at 11:27 AM , OpenID john-bj said...

Why not send them to both addresses. Let's make sure that the people who may be able to do something about all this activity at least are told about it. If they don't know, they will never do anything, but if they get enough of these, they just might.

I got an SMS about my gumtree ad (I actually had 3 of them but it didn't say which--that should have been a warning bell in the first place). They wanted me to email Danobrien@gmail.com. I didn't recognize it was a scam until after I sent the first email and I got a response which smelled a bit fishy. I even sent a PayPal invoice, which is safe enough. But I had no intention of doing anything until PayPal confirmed the money was in the bank. And I certainly wouldn't send THEM any money!!

But then I did a bit of research and cancelled the invoice. I should have researched first. At least I was careful enough not to include my address on the invoice. All they got was my email address.

I received an sms from "blaster" asking me to email Scott Hosking (schosking@gmail.com) regarding my camera ad on Gumtree and received this response:

Thanks for the mail...I am ready to buy it now for my sister as a surprise gift as promised, however due to the nature of my work, phone calls making and visiting of website are restricted but i squeezed out time to check this advert and sent you an email regarding it. I would be glad to pay for it as soon as possible though i will not be available to come for an inspection due to my ever clumsy schedule not to mention that my boss is a psycho LOL. Kindly get back to me with answers to the following questions below

1) What is the condition?
2) Are you the Owner?
3) Pick up Location address for me to forward it to the pick up agent for them to schedule time and the date for the pick up?
4) Your Registered PayPal Name and Registered PayPal Email Address for me to proceed with the payment?

I would be glad to make the payment immediately through PayPal so kindly get back to me with your registered PayPal name and registered PayPal email address for me to proceed with the payment as I am unable to mail a cheque or do a bank transfer (sorry about that). You need not to worry yourself about the shipping, I will instruct the shipping company to handle that and they can meet you at anywhere of your choice to pickup. Therefore in order to complete the transaction, you just need to get back to me with your Registered PayPal Name and Registered PayPal Email Address and total cost so that I can make the payment asap. I will be waiting for your reply

Thanks and apologies about the long mail.

Best,

Hi again, Thank you for the information. I have completed the payment transfer with paypal now and i hope you will have been notified that i have issued out the payment already as i got a deduction message here also so check your email inbox and junk message folders properly to ensure you receive it and read as they told me the receipts contains instructions.

I am insisting that you check both inbox and junk message because paypal said you will receive 2 messages from them the same way I did but when they contacted me, I found one message in my inbox and the other in my junk folder so kindly check yours too and make sure you get the 2 messages. I have made payment plus the shipping charges of $550 as i was instructed by paypal cos they told me they will take security measures due to the fact that this transaction involves a reasonable amount. So reply back to them and also inform me when everything has been sorted and your monies cleared. Once you have
completed their instructions and your money is in your account, we will arrange a time and day for pickup.

Regards,

I advertised 2 days ago on Gumtree. Within 24hrs I received a text message to send an email to craigton2@gmail.com as I now see listed above. Said he was overseas and wanted to purchase ASAP. I replied with a few questions, but they were never answered. I was suspicious, however, sent a PayPal invoice through as requested, but no bank details. He said he preferred all payment via safe PayPal. I got very suspicious when he never asked about the item I was selling, not once. I have now been sent confirmation from PayPal the funds are in my bank but are on hold until I pay shipping fee to Western union. No Way. I now am convinced its a scam and have looked up this website to find his address on it. Can't believe it!!

I received three scam texts like the ones above within 24 hours of advertising on gum tree, on 13 and 14 August 2013
This one is the most persistent:

> Thanks, as for this price it is ok. Due to demanding and eventful work
> i won't be able to come and view it, i am interested in the item and

> have this picked up from your side and have it delivered. Further
> arrangements will be made with you in regards to the pick up once i

> I would appreciate if you email me with more pictures (if available)

I've had the exact same thing - first an SMS asking to email mrblakeholmes@gmail.com

I think received fake emails from paypal and auto shippers - at the top it said service@paypal.com sent by premierjohnjarvis@gmail.com...... nice one!

I was told I had to send the $300 postage or they'll take legal action, sure thing guys! Sound legit :/

Haha I told them there wasnt even a transaction ID on the paypal receipt they sent through, to which I got no reply apart from telling to me to please transfer the money as i've been told....

Hi - I had the same scam from "Philippa Reeves" ,

Long winded email with lots of detail, then the 'International PayPal" emails with details of payment on hold till i pay money to an address in China -
First Name: LINGLING
Family/Surname: YUAN
69 Lewis way, Office Headquarters, Sanlitun,
Beijing, Beijing,
100024
CHINA.

Address Status:Confirmed

Then my funds would be released.

I reported it to PayPal and then received a nasty threatening email, supposedly from 'International PayPal'

Dear Esteemed Customer,

We have just discovered that you have unknowingly confused your own transaction thereby causing unnecessary complications. Our recent investigations has confirmed that you have called or contacted your local PayPal Branch/team and you have been advised not to further complete this transaction, this is totally wrong cos your local branch/team does not have access to your transaction. This transaction with the ID: 62S8492898335130L can only be verified, confirmed, traced and completed by us, the PayPal international department because this is an international payment. You have obviously called or contacted your local PayPal branch and they have given you the wrong information because they have been unable to track your transaction ID. It is normal for your local PayPal branch to stop you from taking further actions on this transaction so as to protect you from possible fraud because we would have done the same thing in our shoes.

We hereby confirm that your transaction is valid and your funds in escrow with us are ready to be credited into your account as soon as you have completed our instructions. To further confirm the genuineness of this transaction, you should forward the PayPal payment notification receipt you received from our team earlier to our security department at phishingteam@paypalwatch.com. Once again, You cannot call or contact your local PayPal department to verify this transaction because this transaction is international, not a local transaction.

We have started legal actions and you still have 24hours to process our instructions and get back to us with the requested details. Failure to read from you after receiving this message will mean that you are an intentional offender OR a con artist as we have clarified your doubts and confusions and we expect you to take immediate actions re our instructions to pay the shipping fees involved so that we can finally credit your account.

Thank you for using PayPal,

Cecilia Rogers,
Customer Inquiry Department
The PayPal International Team

All very nasty... I sent it all to the NSW Fraud squad

I realised it was a scam almost straight away but found it very clever!
I feel very sorry for anyone caught by this and hope to have helped in some way

Attention: (name witheld),

If you respond, they will go far enough to get their hands on some of your money. It depends on how you respond and how much information you give them as to how much of your money they will get.

A younger brother unfortunately fell victim to one of these. Was out of pocket about $400. 250 for shipping, 100 wire transfer, then another 50 to have the packages intercepted by Aus Post and brought back.

Same scenario. Gumtree ad for a laptop. Contacted within an hour. Western Union money trasfers, the whole shebang.

the emails were
kaywiseman020@outlook.com
kaywiseman122@outlook.com

and the paypal one was verificationx_funds@accountant.com but it was disguised as a 'service @paypal.com'

So I sent them a spam bomb.

Have a nice day.Cheers and pls inform other buyers you sold it as am ready to purchase it right away....DavidOn Sun, Mar 9, 2014 at 2:49 PM,

This is a typical reaction from a scammer in an attempt to get you to comply with their original request

What ever you do - DON'T

If you reply to the scammer it just encourages them to continue to write to you because they think you are interested in their original email

Before you post anything on a site like "gumtree" (whether you are new to it or you have advertised something before) you should always search the internet for something like or <"pay pal" scam gumtree> or and see what other people are saying about the subject

It pays to do some research, whether you are selling, buying or receiving emails from people, there are lots of pointers to show you which may be scammers

Another sure method of picking a scam email is to look at the sentence structure, for example, look at the first paragraph of this email.

Even with an allowance for a person from another country writing in a second language, the grammar is just atrocious.

***PATHETIC SCAM - Avoid 'Mark Hodkinson' ( markhodkins@gmail.com ) - wanted western union transfer for shipping of goods to Guangxi, China.

Was taken in until I received the fake PayPal instructions and request to pay shipping via Western Union. The underlying "Paypal" email address, (supposed to be service@paypal.com) was customercareverifiersdesk@consultant.com

The shipping company comes up as a fake too - shipperworldwide@post.com

Same story as below - too busy to view item, wanted photos, didn't respond to specific questions I had about his use of the item. PATHETIC SCAM***
